The Salmon Clock: my autumn at Knight Inlet

I've flown into Glendale Cove twice now, camera in my lap, to photograph the largest gathering of grizzlies in British Columbia. This is what the viewing-stand season actually looks like — and how to time your own trip.

About Knight Inlet Lodge

Knight Inlet Lodge is a floating lodge in a sheltered cove at Glendale Cove, roughly 240 kilometres northwest of Vancouver in the Great Bear Rainforest, and it is owned by five partner First Nations — Da'naxda'xw Awaetlala, Mamalilikulla, Tlowitsis, Wei Wai Kum and K'omoks. Eighteen rooms with ensuite bathrooms take up to 36 guests on three-night packages. The viewing method changes with the season rather than the calendar: spring and summer are boat-based, as bears feed on estuary growth and then berries, and from late August the lodge moves to purpose-built stands above the spawning channels as pink salmon draw dozens of grizzlies in. Bear tours are the core product, with inlet cruises, old-growth walks, tracking tours and a boardwalk hike included as alternatives. Minimum age is six in summer and eight from late August.
