Rod, reel, rotor: three ways to fish British Columbia

Fifteen private lakes in the Interior, a heli-fishing lodge on the Gold River, and a charter fleet working Tofino's open coast year-round. I've photographed all three — here's how to choose between them.

About Caverhill Fly Fishing Lodge

Caverhill is a small fly-fishing lodge on a chain of fifteen freshwater lakes north of Kamloops, reached only by the lodge's own boat. It takes a maximum of twelve guests in log cabins, and the season is short — mid-June to the end of August. Rates are published clearly and per person: three, four or five nights, all inclusive of breakfast, a packed lunch, dinner and the use of every boat and lodge facility. The same nightly figure applies whether you book as an individual, a couple, or take the whole lodge, which makes a private buyout for a family or a group of ten straightforward to price. It is trout water fished from small boats rather than a river-wading operation, and owners Larry and Marlene Loney have run it long enough that the lodge is a fixture of the interior fly-fishing calendar.
